I heard a rumor that during the Winter Meetings there were conversations with NY and Miami for a Lopez/Chisholm package. Not necessarily giving validity to the rumor or even the extent to how deep these conversations got, but I was curious what it would take on the NYY side to match that value. This deal gives Miami Torres to replace Chisholm in the lineup and Schmidt to replace Lopez in the rotation and 2 high end prospects to bolster their farm system. It allows them to stay competitive today but really strengthens the farm system for the future. It's not a full tank move but it would certainly put them further behind the Braves, Mets, and Phillies in the division. For the Yankees, it nearly empties the upper end of the farm, but it gives them a proven MLB piece in the middle infield with 4 years of control remaining and another arm to bolster a strong rotation. Trading Volpe and Torres helps alleviate the log jam of pieces in the infield. Adding Chisholm provides a much-needed LH bat in the lineup along with a speed element on the basepaths.
