3MLBTR just released an article detailing the Padres' pursuit of Kris Bryant this offseason. The Padres have no shortage of minor league talent, but the potential targets that the Cubs were reportedly interested in were top prospect Luis Campusano and a high-upside, major league caliber pitcher in Dinelson Lamet. I see Lamet as a more suitable option, as the Cubs have a premier catcher in Willson Contreras, and the Padres have several MLB-ready starters waiting at the teams Triple-A affiliate. Cubs deal Kris Bryant. Obviously there is no longer any traction to a Bryant deal before July 31. If this deal had been completed, the Cubs would essentially be forfeiting two years of an expensive Kris Bryant for a controllable bonafide bat-misser in Dinelson Lamet, an on-base machine in Edward Olivares, and an incredibly talented southpaw starter in Joey Cantillo. Cantillo posted a 2.26 ERA in 112 innings last year. Yeah, you read that right, a 2.26! Lamet is also a hitter's nightmare when he is in control, posting a massive spin-rate and a super high whiff rate on his fastball and slider. Especially with Chatwood, Lester, and Quintana about to hit free agency, I don't think it would hurt the Cubs to consider adding some controllable young arms. The Padres side of this gets a bit tricky. Allegedly, the Padres had considered moving Fernando Tatis Jr. to CF if they had been able to land Francisco Lindor. They had not considered this for Bryant, but it would not be out of the realm of possibility to move Machado to SS and Tatis to the outfield. Because of the jagged fit that Bryant would have in the Padres lineup, I figured they would not be prone to paying the full model price on him. I don't think David Bote would be a terrible replacement for Bryant at third. Yes, obviously Bote is not on the same wavelength, but he was still able to post a 2 WAR season with limited opportunities for the Cubs. Nico Hoerner is ready for the bigs, and if he can successfully learn to play second base, the Cubs infield could soon return to its prior strength.

On the contrary, this seems like a reasonable deal. That story did not clarify what, if any, other pieces might have been discussed, only that Lamet was of interest (as was Campusano, presumably as an alternative lead piece). The fact that a deal did not happen doesn't mean much. But the idea that either Lamet or Campusano would be the lead piece in a package makes a lot of sense from a valuation perspective.
