Santana has one year left on his deal and is getting up there in age; Cleveland wants to find a replacement (preferably a players getting close to their prime with years of control, like Shaw.) Especially if they trade Lindor and want to start a soft rebuild, Shaw, a former first-rounder from 2015, is one of the better options under contract until 2026. He has legitimate power (i would say 55-60) potential and a 45 hit tool. Defense is a question mark, but he plays an average 1B and a passable LF. Naylor's the only other player like that on the Indians roster and they need depth at that player role. In return, they give up DeShields who is surplus to requirements (on their roster) as a defense-first OF and their first rounder from 2014 who's stuck in A-ball at age 21. It really comes down to a prospect-for-prospect trade, both of whom are trying to find that elusive hit tool.
