I would actually say the Athletics win this trade because not only are they getting these players for basically free, they are young, utility pieces that could end up making an impact in the lineup come the next 3 years. Canha is getting older and he is a free agent at seasons end, and with a season that hasn't started good at all and a front office that you already know won't resign him, why not trade him. For the Sox this is a rental player with Eloy out and once Engel comes back im sure Canha will take left and Engel will platoon with Eaton. The Sox don't really have a spot for Collins anymore as his time is almost up with the Sox, but he is still young and if we are being honest, he isn't really a catcher, he is more of a 1b/DH. Mendick can basically play every position and Zavala provides a backup catcher spot, and he's shown some promise in Spring Training the past couple years.

If the A's are far enough out of it to trade Canha by the deadline, they're not competing and have no use for the money.
