7The Yankees need an affordable outfielder that can play centerfield and Reynolds brings the ability to switch hit as well. He checks all the boxes as far as addressing Yankee needs at the moment - CF, affordable, switch hitting, and won't take a boatload of the Yankees top prospects to acquire. The Pirates are looking to acquire as many prospects as possible and this helps them in that regard. Using the Taillon to the Yankees trade as a blueprint: Taillon was valued at 16.3 on this site at the time he was traded. The Yankees sent 21.8 in valued prospects back to Pittsburgh in the deal for a 5.5 overpay. This trade follows the same pattern as the Yankees slightly overpay by 4 as far as BBTV is concerned. I believe the site probably has Reynolds valued a little bit lower than he should be, but not enough to make the bones of this deal to fall apart. I'm sure the Yankees would be willing to throw in another couple of lower level prospects or bump up the Waldichuck player to a slightly better pitching prospect, although not as highly rated as Gil or Medina.
How about a highlight? I'm curious how this one ends up being perceived. I think the deal makes too much sense for both sides to not consider.
Pirates aren't trading Reynolds and especially not for that
At the time I proposed the trade, I believed Reynolds was undervalued and obviously the site agreed with me and his value appears to be more accurate at 34.8 now. The package with those values might be Peraza, Alcantara, and Medina or Gil. That would be a fantastic haul for Pittsburgh of players that could all come up late 2022 or 2023 when they might be closer to competing. I would make that trade as Yankee GM, but I don't believe Brian Cashman, actual Yankee GM would.
I can't see the Pirates wanting any part of this trade. Reynolds is one of their bright young, controllable players. All three of the Yankee prospects are just starting out and may or may not be decent. Budget challanged teams can't afford to trade their young controllable stars for maybes 3-5 years away. High salaried veterans can usually go, but not core players.
The Pirates are clearly trying to accumulate as much young talents as possible and Reynolds may be part of that core.. But, none of their veteran players are going to bring in prospects that can make a difference in the next few years. They were rumored to be open to trading Reynolds last season, although he was having a horrendous year and they weren't going to get equal value for him. His trade value on this site and in reality is pretty high right now. If they want to grab multiple prospects for a chance to compete by 2023, trading Reynolds for a package of Peraza, Alcantara, and Gil or Medina could go a long way for them.
