4Idea here is simple: Dodgers get a straight-up rental to replace Bauer plus some cash to offset some of the luxury tax. Nats get two interesting pitching prospects, both of whom have great stuff but could end up in the bullpen, plus Neuse (a former Nats draftee who comes over in the assumption that the Nationals will also unload Castro or Harrison and want a cheap bridge to a future infield).
Sherzer is not a straight up rental. Boras has stated he/ Max will not accept trade without an extension in place from acquiring team.
Boras walked that back 3 days later, saying "When players are traded, and you refer to contract amendments, it does not necessarily mean an extension. It could be any amendment that gives him a reason to exercise his rights. That’s up to the player at the time. Max and I have never discussed the subject.” (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/06/boras-scherzer-wouldnt-waive-no-trade-rights-without-extension.html)
In that case, this is a fair trade that fits both teams needs. LAD might resign Max afterward anyway if he helps in playoff run
