I don't see the Pirates even thinking about this deal. For a seemingly endlessly rebuilding franchise, $17M is probably at least 20-25% of their entire payroll. Adams bombed badly at A+ and is highly questionable. Daniel is just about worth 1.1. Although Bachman is a decent prospect, he certainly isn't worth $17M.

I agree this is very unlikely to happen. I do think the Pirates should consider taking on a bad contract to get a prospect or two but this would be a big investment. I do think Newman as a glove only shortstop could fit on the Angels since it would free them to spend $ elsewhere.

Upton also has a no trade clause. I highly doubt he would approve a trade to PIT.

Very valid point. I wish the Pirates could pull off a bad contract w/prospects trade but this is likely not the best candidate. Thanks for commenting.

This is basically me playing but the thin logic would be: Angels: Free up even more cash (about 1/2 of Upton salary) to compete now. Get a glove only shortstop (which could work if everybody else hits like they could). Pirates: How much are they (likely not as much as what is left of Upton contract) willing to pay to buy some good prospects. I do think Newman to Angels for a prospect is not a bad idea for either team, but adding Upton made this more interesting.
