3If the A's are going to tank and do a complete rebuild, the last thing they would want is Myers' contract.
Yes, the purpose of posting this trade was to demonstrate how the A's could speed a rebuild by taking on a bad 1-year contract. It only makes sense if either: 1. The A's trade enough of their most expensive players (Olson, Chapman, Bassitt, Manaea, etc...) to be able to fit Myers into the payroll, or 2. The new CBA includes a salary floor that forces the A's to increase their payroll. Personally, I don't think the A's will do a full tear-down rebuild, because that's not how they have done their rebuilds in the past 20+ years. Unless a salary-floor in imposed, they will more likely trade a few expensive players and use the returning assets to partially re-charge the farm system while also keeping the current club theoretically competitive.
I disagree. If the A's are going to tank and start a complete rebuild AND they have the payroll space (which is doubtful) then buying a prospect by taking on a bad contract, 1 year contract is classic rebuild strategy.
