5As a Guardians fan I'd much rather keep Quantrill rather than getting the so so Gurriel Jr. If Cleveland gets an OFer from Toronto it would have to be Hernandez, but he's only controlled through 2023. It's difficult to see a deal between Cleveland and Toronto before the next offseason if at all. McGuire is nothing to write home about and Jimenez would be buried in Cleveland's MIF rich system. I think pitch to contact SP get dinged by the "formula" so I understand why Quantrill's value is kind of low, but after last season's performance I'd guess Chernoff values him a bit higher. Considering Quantrill's age, cost, yrs of control, and performance make him a valuable commodity to whoever has him. Right now that's the Guardians. Just my $.02. Edited to say that Gurriel Jr would be a significant improvement in LF for us, but not at the cost of Quantrill. If they deal a SP it will probably be Plesac or Civale and more likely Plesac. It will also be for a better player than Gurriel Jr.
Agreed. Swap out Jimenez and McGuire for Lopez then sign Maile (same no bat all glove catcher) would you do the deal? As a Jay's fan I think they go for a #5 FA SP and save the prospect capital.
Not sure I'm following you goatz. What would Cleveland do with Lopez and Quantrill is a bit more than a "#5 SP" so I'm missing the point. If the Jays think that Jimenez and McGuire are significant "prospect capital" then perhaps they would be better off keeping them and signing a FA SP. Cleveland certainly wouldn't be better off taking them in this trade. McGuire is essentially a backup C and Jimenez doesn't make Cleveland's top 30 list. I just don't see a good fit for these 2 teams.
My bad for the poor wording. Do you think the Guardians go for a Gurriel/Lopez for Quantril trade. Lopez has the higher floor and ceiling than Jimenez. Then the Guardians sign Maile (or any of the other FA BU C's). I think the Jays would pass on a trade for a SP of Quantril's caliber. I believe they go the FA route for a more tradition #5 SP and save the trade capital. I can't for the life of me see much in the way of trades between Cleveland and Toronto that makes much sense when there are options in FA for both teams.
I don't see how Lopez fits in Cleveland and I think their sights are set higher than Gurriel Jr. I just don't see a fit that wouldn't have Toronto overpaying for Quantrill or Cleveland being undersold. The problem is that both teams are looking to contend. Toronto is pretty much there minus a SP or 2 and maybe a replacement for Semien's bat. The only thing Cleveland has that would interest the Blue Jays is SP and Ramirez. Cleveland is in need of a good corner OF bat or 2, but won't sacrifice one of their SP for a 2-3 WAR OFer. The only way I see Cleveland trading one of Plesac, Civale, or Quantrill to Toronto for Gurriel is if Pearson comes with him and they have confirmed he is healthy enough to start. If that is the case why would Toronto trade him when his upside is so much higher than any of Plesac, Civale, or Quantrill? It has already been stated publicly that the Blue Jays inquired about Ramirez, but the cost was too high. It's a difficult match. Getting a 3rd team involved would be the only way to make something happen in my opinion. That's as fair and honest as I can get.
