5It's more that Voit wouldn't have a spot on the roster. I originally didn't have him in the deal but my thought was that if the A's are going to rebuild, they will still need players that can play this year and next while their prospects develop. Perhaps the Yankees would have to pay down his contract (estimated $5.5M) to make it interesting for the A's. Maybe I'm just an idiot playing with trades during a lockout because I'm bored.
This site really needs to include salaries and a message for team needs. The error would come up on this trade saying the A’s are trying to shed payroll they won’t be taking on Voit.
We're considering adding a team budget function, but the team needs thing is more subjective, and therefore a bit dicier. We have to be careful not to dictate too much or it takes all the fun out of it.
Given that the trade balances without him, he's Super 2 Arb (and therefore already getting expensive), defensively limited (career -26 DRS at 1B), and won't be around when the contention window is expected to re-open and therefore irrelevant to the A's needs, I must conclude you REALLYREALLYREALLY want to get rid of Voit. A's don't blame you, but don't want him (and his hit to their payroll) either.
A's fill-in for 1B is internal. Seth Brown (4.3TV) has 5 years of control, is left-handed and can play a decent 1B, grades out defensively average as a corner OF, and hit 20 HR over 111 games last year. Not a guy who hits for average, but a passable cheap controllable lefty who can fit multiple slots, perfect for the next three years. He's been quietly slipped into a few trade proposals by otherteamfans over the last month or two who see a chance to try and grab some value.
