3As a Mets fan, I don’t really want Castillo, but if the Reds really want to dump payroll, then this is a solid option. Reds get younger, with Groshans, Ginn (2023), and Mauricio (2023) almost ready to become starters next year. Not sure when Groshans is ready, but he is very good. Blue Jays get another productive middle of the order bat in Cano, a Starting CF in Nimmo to replace Semien at the top of the order, a depth starter in Santillan, and another power reliever in Antone to compete in the bullpen. The Mets get their SP3, with Grichuk backing up their 2 current OF and a free agent signing, and Moustakas providing veteran presence around the infield at the cost of Steve Cohen’s money. The sticking point is probably Cano. I will also be sending a trade for Gray that doesn’t include Cano.
Reds don't make this trade. First off, they are not looking for a shortstop...that position is well covered between Farmer or Barrero. Next, including Santillan and Antone makes no sense. Santillan will likely be a valued member of the bullpen, one area the Reds cannot afford to weaken. Antone underwent TJ surgery last fall and will not be available until at least early/mid '23. It would take more than what you are proposing to acquire Castillo alone. And no one...NO ONE...is gonna trade anything for Cano, even if the Mets eat most of his salary.
Yeah, the deal without Cano makes a lot more sense, and has been much better received. A fan can dream, and I think Cano will have value somewhere. I just don’t want him on the Mets, and I’m willing to pay with players/cash/anything to get him off the team. Honestly, I have seen a ton of reports that say the Mets are just going to cut him before the season starts. Not sure how the timing works there, but letting him go somewhere else to play for free does free up a roster spot, but at a massive loss. I hate that trade. I hated it then, and I hate it now.
