3Bit of an overpay but could likely get it done without giving up whiz
Why would the Cardinals do that? Two utility players with little upside that look like players we already have and a shortstop that is years away. We already have one of those in the system as well. Prospects fail all the time. The Cards need two high upside prospects. The hope is one of them turns out to be good.
Schmitt offers Gold Glove caliber defense at 3B with positional versatility at every infield spot and has a league average bat already. Matos is a solid contact bat with decent power and an extremely low k rate. If they can get him reps consistently he’s a high upside guy big league ready at 24 years old. Prospects are all about asset management and addition. Adding a borderline top 100 prospect who’s still young is always a good thing. There’s definitely reasons this could be good for either side.
