17@Grover I know A's would be like heck to the no about this one, hence why the numbers aren't always near being right on here, but I could see Cleveland taking a deal like this one... It makes 100% sense cause they get a RH bat that can play CF and they get the depth SP, so they have a next man up still just Morris instead of Allen...
Maybe Tyrone Taylor could be available from the Mets? If the A's can't find a Thomas/Rental SP deal in the offseason then they might make him available in ST if they're feeling good about their OF depth with Junior Perez and Henry Bolte. On a different topic... I was thinking about a BAH HUMBUG teardown of the A's roster, sending anyone making more than 6 figures to places TBD. Would Cleveland like to land Rooker if I go that route?
I don’t make this deal if I’m the A’s. Too much upside with Morris and Thomas for a BOR SP like Allen. I’m not sure Cleveland will want to block Valera, Rodriguez, Jones, Kayfus or whatever young player they want in RF. Now if Kwan were dealt that could change their perspectives. I do like adding Thomas and Morris to Cleveland’s young group and I’d consider sending Cantillo to get them. How do you feel about that idea Grover?
I'm not a Cantillo fan. I see a "SP" that's never thrown 120 IP. I think he's a classic swingman, good for spot starts and multiple innings pitched out of the bullpen. That has value, especially on a league minimum salary, but I see Thomas as the biggest trade chip available to the A's this offseason and I wouldn't part with him unless I knew I was getting a 30+ GS SP.
Allen is a 30+ GS guy when it comes to starts... The guy hasn't missed a start since being drafted...
I meant a good, 30+ GS SP.
I figured, I just said that to mess with you a bit, but Allen fits the description of a 30+ SP and so does Peterson... (Peterson is a bit undervalued as a SP)
As back-end rotation arms (and I agree that Peterson seems light but he's the type of arm that's going to have to prove himself at every level because the stuff doesn't pop). The A's have back-end options in-house.
Allen isn’t bad and he’s durable as hell. Thomas isn’t without his own warts and I don’t think you’ll get a better SP than Cantillo with those two. At least not one close to ML ready.
I agree Allen isn't bad. But he's not good, either. He's a cheap innings eater that will never make a playoff rotation (if his team can help it) and you're looking to upgrade talent wise before his arbitration number start to get unpleasant. I think Thomas can get a rental arm like CIN's Singer or KC's Bubic. If the best the A's can get is Cantillo or Allen then I'd rather keep Thomas.
You are severely undervaluing Cantillo and I think you need to look at his performance down the stretch. I understand the durability questions, but he's healthy and had no setbacks last season. Doesn't have a violent motion and has sound, repeatable mechanics. I don't think Cleveland's brass gives up Cantillo for 2 low value players.
After 7 years (not going to count 2020 because that year was such a mess) of Will He/Won't He... Cantillo is going to have to do the thing he's never done before I believe him capable of doing the thing he's never done.
Hmm... I would say IF Rooker became available, Cleveland would definitely put in an offer... Problem is they really don't wish to trade certain SPs (Bibee, Williams, Cecconi, Cantillo, Messisk, Peterson, Doughty, Stephen)... and its likely the offer would be tied to Chourio and Velazquez... I just don't see an offer that really entices the As at the moment... Cleveland just got Fairchild on an MiLB deal, so Taylor isn't any better than him. They would want either a guy who is at MLB ready with years of control if they were going to make a trade now, otherwise it is Fairchild's spot to loose.
BAH HUMBUG trades are far more reasonable than you suggest: only one of the names you mentioned would need be included. Rooker for Braylon Doughty+ Johnathan Rodriguez. 40 man neutral and Cleveland doesn't part with anyone they're counting on for the next couple seasons. The A's get a borderline Top 100 prospect and a second chance to catch lightning in the bottle with a RH power bat. The A's will also be shopping Butler, Springs, Severino, Leiter, McNeil, Wynns, Langeliers, and now Soderstrom.
I have a hunch from the way the guys who cover the Guardians the best, talked about Doughty, that he wouldn't be available even for Rooker... Cleveland has 10 pitchers in their top 30 prospects... Messick, Palette amd Walters will be off by Seasons end... Peterson and Espino likely will make their MLB debuts in 26... That's 5 of them that may fall off their rankings board by the end of the season... Their SP rankings then are Stephen, Doughty, Hartle, Oakie, Hynes... Hynes is smallish, Oakie is a heavy reliever risk... Hartle is a left handed Peterson/Taller Allen... Cleveland cannot afford to move Doughty... Now Rooker could pry away Doughty depending on IF Cleveland felt Rooker is worth his monetary value at ages 34/35...
Welp. Rooker is a thrice over 30 HR hitter that just turned 31 in November and will make $6 MM in 2026. He's set to make $31 MM during his Age 31-33 seasons. He'll be 34 in 2029, which is his last guaranteed year at $17 MM. 2030 is a club option (no reported buyout) that can vest with 500 PA in 2029 or 2x Top 10 finished in MVP voting from 2027 thru 2029. If Cleveland doesn't want him, someone else will. Once the Soderstrom contract details get posted (and BTV can update) I'll post the teardown offers.
Fair enough... I don't actually see Cleveland making a move til the trade deadline anyways for a big gun like Rooker, Draft and player production could reshape their top 30 by then...
