Red Sox also acquire Adonys Guzman (not in our system, nor in any other we can find), while the Pirates also get Jesus Travieso, who is not in our system.
RH SP Johan Oviedo still has an option. Bye bye Jovani Moran? Vaughn Grissom? Going to be a busy 7 days for the Red Sox front office I think. Looks like Criswell (with no options) is the DFA for LH Tyler Samaniego with 3 options, (wouldn’t surprise me if he clears and returns).
Ms. Dajuba my old friend. Not one of your better takes. Guzman isn't worth a 40 man roster spot. Criswell has too much upside to trade. Call this trade an opening for Campbell. Oviedo's role? Kinda of side move trade. The RS still need a first-baseman+catching depth+third baseman+right-handed power. A possible Duran trade? Breslow's trading pattern has been extremely confusing so far. This trade is hard to rate without more information.
Adonys Guzman doesn’t need a 40 man roster spot until December ‘28. To me it looks like Breslow was willing to trade option able Outfielder depth to acquire option able SP & LH RP depth. With an exchange of a far off SP prospect for a far off Catching prospect thrown in to get the deal across the finish line. Other than depth, I don’t think this trade has much to do with the big needs you listed that the Red Sox have on the active roster. It’s about adding a deck chair to the ones he just rearranged.
Criswell got DFAed so you were corrected. Criswell and Winckowski seemed to disappeared this year. I heard off-hand comments about these guys. What is Breslow's overall agenda?
Cora was not a fan or a believer in Winckowski and he pretty much ran him out of Boston. Breslow, I believe, does not want to be handcuffed any further with players on the 40 man that don’t have an option(s). I think the goal is to have better roster flexibility with deep depth for a playoff contending club during the season. And to not have players on the active 26 man roster that can not be optioned down unless they are of the superstar caliber nature. Vaughn Grissom & Jovani Moran days on the 40 man roster have to be down to a few, the current 40 man is full and if the Red Sox want to make a selection in the rule 5 draft on the 10th they need to open up a spot because you can’t make a selection without having an open spot on the 40 man roster, even if you make a pick and trade him right away. At least, that’s how I see it.
I hope Vaughn Grissom gets a chance to prove himself. Grissom deserves a better opportunity than he was given. Why Sonny Gray when there similar free agents were available giving up a decent pitching prospect?
Breslow will trade for SP Skubal at the deadline…and I wouldn’t be shocked or surprised by a 37yr Gray & the Red Sox agreeing to the $30m mutual option in ‘27. I can see a scenario where the Red Sox are unwilling to go to the length$ that it will take to get the bat(s) they would like and pivoting to Mayer at 3B, adding a 1B on a 1yr deal and Grissom being given an opportunity to earn the 2B job in the spring. I think they decided on Gray because he can be short term (1 or 2 years) and prefer to wait for the free agent SP class of next off season, specifically Skubal. I think there was interest in Cease but Toronto blew everybody away.
