17So wild
A bit of a shocker. Grayson's injury history is a big red flag, but there's still upside there. Ward is a one-year rental. A lot of potential value for Baltimore to give up, but it's possible the medicals are worse than we know publicly.
Maybe if Grayson has to pitch southpaw now...
My first thought was that this seemed like getting Tyler O'Neill, but now I’m thinking they must really like Ward and I wouldn’t be surprised if he got an extension from the Orioles. The Angels getting Rodriguez….. it’s the Angels, I’ve given up trying to figure them out. I’ve got to give the Orioles a 👍 and the Angels a 👎
I honestly think you had Grayson overvalued mostly because he is coming off of some injuries. Ward's value may be low, mostly because of the fact their aren't a lot of 30+ HR RHs in the league. It's likely a bidding war happened with Ward since multiple teams needed his type of bat.
Fair, but one thing we've always been clear about: we don't have access to the medicals (which are, of course, private), so we can't model injury cases with precision.
Unless there’s more coming back to the O’s, this has to be a case where they just don’t really believe he’s likely to be whole again. And the Halos are betting on a chance that he will be, however slim that is.
Seeing as its the Angels winning this deal, and its so early, I wonder if there is something seriously wrong with Grayson that would have scared any team not ran by a meddling owner passing on him. Barring that, Elias better be on the hot seat.
Oh my God. Either the O's have figured out TJ failures before anyone else, or...Honestly just feel sad for a dude right now. Was on pace to earn 50 MIL, now seems lucky to hit arbitration healthy.
Everyone keeps saying G.Rod had TJS, but ESPN reports he had debridement surgery to remove bone chips. Removing bone chips doesn’t sound so bad to me and if that’s all it was, what the heck are the O’s thinking here? I like Ward a lot but the O’s got fleeced.
I think it’s his pitching shoulder that is the concern. While in the minors in 2022, he missed three months while dealing with a Grade 2 right lat strain, but it did not stop there. In 2024, he was on the IL for right shoulder inflammation and then ended his season in August due to a right lat/teres strain. This past season, he started the season on the IL with right elbow inflammation and, while experiencing a setback, ended his season in August after he underwent debridement surgery.
Ms. Dajuba brought receipts.
Gotcha. Well, Angels swinging for the fences is definitely an Angels thing to do.
As much as the Phillies need right handed pop I never considered this guy because he is home run or nothing but to overpay for him like the Orioles did here would send me into a fit of rage if I hated myself and decided I was going to be an Orioles fan.
I wonder who brought up Grayson Rodriguez? Did the Orioles call about Ward and bring him up or did the Angels ask about him. Did the Orioles openly shop him?
Shocking 1:1 trade. Thought Baltimore would at least get a mid tier AAA arm back from the Angels alongside Ward. But that is it? Their new owner Rubenstein must have approved a big payroll increase to bring in 2 of the frontline pitchers of this year’s FA (Framber & King? Cease & Gallen?) to create a damn good top 4 of a rotation alongside Bradish and Rogers. Which I don’t like as a Yankees fan. Ugh. Great move for the Angels as Ward was a rental and not in their long term plans. And you can always get outfielders like a Austin Hays type for $5-6M AAV on a short term deal to go alongside Trout & Adell in the outfield (assuming that Soler won’t be DFA’d and will split DH w/Trout).

Baltimore must really, really hate Rodriguez’s metric/medicals after TJ. This is baffling for a team that needs pitching.
