10Why do the Snakes need Volpe?
You confuse me for someone who gives a damn about what the Snakes need.
I guess that question was too hard. I vow to keep them simple from now on.
The Diamondbacks are a small market team. They are getting cheap upside in Volpe, dumping a lot of back end money that could come back to bite them in a few years with Marte, and dumping an underwater contract in Rodriguez.
Snakes had a payroll around $195mm last season. That is not a small market payroll. They have Gallen and Kelly as free agents. They need starting pitching. Why would they move Marte, probably their best trade chip, and another starting pitcher for a second baseman and shortstop and not receive ANY pitching in return?
They traded Kelly at the deadline. They are not going to resign Gallen. They are going to dump Rodriguez's contract on somebody. If there is a team out there that is OK with Burnes not pitching in 2026, they will probably dump his contract too. They are going to get by with less like most middle and small market teams.
So you admit they need starting pitching. If they need to trim payroll they just did it with Gallen and Kelly. Again, your proposal does not square with the fact that AZ needs starting pitching in return for their ultimate trade chip, not Yankee discards.
I would not call someone who BTV values at $16.2MM and has four years of cheap control to be a discard. I also don't know how much of a market there is for a 31-year old infielder who is going to make over $60MM during the last three years of his contract. The Yankees might be one of very few teams who would be willing to take a chance on the back end of Marte's contract. But if I have to offer Will Warren instead of Jazz Chisholm and talk to another team that might be interested in Chisholm, I would probably be willing to do that. A cheap upside player like Volpe is exactly the kind of player that a team like the Diamondbacks should be interested in acquiring.
The reason you are including Volpe in this deal is the fact that his production is detoriating and Jazz is a knucklehead. I repeat, the Snakes value starting pitching in return for Marte. Your continual sidestepping is not going to change the facts.
https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/201681 Is this better? Volpe played injured last year and Chisholm is Marte Lite. The Yankees can afford to take a chance on Marte's contract. The Diamondbacks cannot.
