1I saw in a recent Bob Nightengale article that the Padres may look to move some money this offseason, and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s name was mentioned as a long-shot possibility. While the likelihood is minimal, even the thought of it raises an intriguing scenario: if San Diego were to consider moving him, Tatis would fill a major hole for the Phillies and bring balance to the lineup. Despite feeling like a veteran, Tatis is still younger than Brandon Marsh and remains an MVP-caliber talent on a relatively team-friendly deal. After trading away their top shortstop prospect for Mason Miller, the Padres could regain a high-upside SS prospect and add a bat with legitimate potential in Escobar. Including Marsh would also give San Diego an everyday outfielder, helping them stay competitive in 2026 without fully punting on the season, while shedding around $42 million in salary. This move could buy valuable time for the organization as ownership and payroll stabilize. I’d also like to see the Phillies acquire Yu Darvish as part of the deal. While he likely won’t pitch anytime soon, adding a player with his knowledge, leadership, and global respect, particularly in the Japanese market, could provide immense long-term value. Philadelphia has long tried to establish a stronger presence in the Far East baseball market. Despite making pushes for Ohtani when he first came over and offering the most money to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, they’ve yet to land a major Japanese star. Bringing in Darvish, someone revered by many current Japanese players and a mentor figure in that community, could finally open that door.
