2It’s not an awful trade for the Rays considering Harrison’s somewhat decent results to date and pedigree for more upside (even to SP), but I just can’t see the Rays trading Yandy within the Division absent a clear overpayment (which this isn’t). If Harrison remains just a nondescript MIRP, this trade would be viewed as an awful trade by Rays fans unless the wheels totally fall off Yandy’s game next year (which looks unlikely).
The whole “trading within the division” thing is overblown, and in many cases, viewed incorrectly. If you’re unloading veterans for younger players, it makes sense to trade within the division. Teams unloading veterans are weakening their present to strengthen their future. Why not also weaken the future of a division rival in the same trade?
