If the Mets can't/won't hang on to Alonzo, Contreras would make a good replacement for about half the PB's money. What I doubt Chaim does is use Burly to sweeten the pot to end up with yet another middle infield "glove guy" & a swing & miss 1B only will not be an improvement.

Yes, Contreras would be the Alonso pivot. You could flip Nootbar for Burly if you wanted and it would probably work as well. I targeted Burly in this trade for a DH/backup 1B/occasional COF type, and if the Cards are rebuilding, they could sell high on him. Ewing really shot up the rankings with the Mets and held his own in AA at 21, playing 2B and CF. Clifford is Burleson with a bit better defense and way more control. If Bloom is blowing things up, I don't think Burleson is off the table. Cards should get decent value back from Gray and Donovan. But I'm not seeing that they are getting top 100 type prospects Contreras or Burleson. I'll concede that the Mets may need to toss in a pitcher additionally (Lambert or Ziegler) or take less money to make it work.

Cards don't need 2B/CF prospects as much as corner OF power bats and SP, SP, SP. I know, the 2 things everyone needs. They have gaggles of relief arms & C in their system, so they don't need those as well. Also, the Cards will be drafting in the Top 10 again this year and there are 12 SS/CF prospects among the 14 top prospects in the draft. I DO acknowledge $ next to nothing to Cohen but the world to the DeWallets, much to our shame.
