Good to hear from you Grove. This proposal is not a positional one-for-one. It aims to satisfy needs of both squads. Ashcraft’s DL time I believe has never been arm related, whereas Miller’s time on the DL in ‘23 and ‘22 were forearm and shoulder, respectively. Reds need a closer, A’s do not. You have cited on other proposals that A’s need RP. Ashcraft and hard throwing Phillips provide that. Bleday has become a 4th OF for A’s. His doubles will become HR’s in GABP. Benson has a higher BA and is probably more athletic. He will be an awesome 4th OFer. Susac has catching bloodlines and is stuck behind Langeliers. Dudo, a much coveted international signing, has a rare bat for a catcher a good arm, is learning the catching position and would arrive in time to replace Langeliers. I hesitate including any of these Reds players, but know you have to give quality to get it in return. Aloha, my friend!
Aloha? I'm almost jealous! Anyways... Ashcraft has had at least two trips to the IL due to arm injury, with another three IL trips within the past couple seasons. I have been shopping for arms but I've been (mostly) bargain hunting and focused on guys not on the IL. (Trading Miller would make my bullpen shopping even more urgent.) Bleday is a 4th OFer and I'm willing to move him... for arms. I'm happy to trade Bleday and figure out OF depth later. I disagree that the A's don't need a closer; if they ever want to return to respectability they'll need someone like Miller. I think well of Duno but teenage Catchers in Low-A are a risky demographic and including Phillips doesn't move the needle for me.
Grove, you would agree that teams need a closer when they expect to contend for a playoff spot, are the A’s ready this year?
I don't agree. I think one of the most debilitating things a young team can endure is to have the bullpen blow a game in the 9th. I had no expectation for the A's to contend in 2025. 2026? Maybe if things worked out really really well in 2025.
