6Mountcastle doesn't do much for the Phillies here. First base is locked up and he hasn't played the OF in years
Mountcastle would be the bench bat to cover for Harper. Not an outfielder.
Harper isn’t set to miss much time. Maybe short term IL. And they have Kemp sitting at AAA with the second highest OPS in the minors at 26 years old ready to be called up if needed. He has more upside than Mountcastle. It honestly would be a waste of a roster spot considering they have better bench options already.
And yet the 26yr undrafted free agent from 2022 still hasn’t gotten the call, Kemp is not regarded as a strong defender, but he’s been playing third base, second base, corners in the outfield, and some 1B, he already has 10 stolen bases and has stolen 20 each of the past 2yrs. Mountcastle is a proven MLB player that a playoff contender could have interest in a bench/backup role vs an unproven 26yr rookie in a bench/backup role.
Phillies would never waste a bench spot for a 1st base only, when Harper is an everyday player. He’d never see the field, and the way Rob platoons his bench, everyone plays in a platoon. Plus Harper is set to be back next series. Kemp can play at least an average level at 4 different positions
Now I see Mountcastle on the IL…….oh well 🤷🏽♀️
