5Martinez's value to Reds far more than 1.1 value assigned by btv. He is pitching much better and the Reds really need him if they hope to contend for the playoffs.
Keep in mind that 1.1 number represents his surplus value. His field value from here is 15.5, but he's owed $14.4M in salary, so any team that potentially acquires him would pay the bulk of the acquisition cost in taking over that salary commitment.
Understood and good point but if this trade went through and the Dodgers took the remaining salary on and lets say that gave the Reds 10M to play with would they use it at the trade deadline to get a serious OF or pocket the savings? That then would become the question. I would go after someone like Andy Pages. Dodges know how valuable Martinez is and so do the Reds. Heck, Dodgers could extend Martinez without blinking an eye. Reds need a decent OF and Pages fits that.
The Reds according have less than a 10 chance to make the playoffs according to Baseball reference and fangraphs. He's realistically their only good trade chip
Disagree about him being the only one but he is the one that sticks out the most. It depends if Reds management actually tries to get better or just put a bandaid on things like they usually do.
