3The cardinals and cubs will not be dealing with each other directly, but this is the framework of how it could work. Probably 2 separate trades similar to the Gaurdians-Pirates-Blue Jays trades with Spencer Horowitz earlier this offseason. Phillies flip Bohm for a nice catching prospect, which they desperately need, and swap Walker’s contract for Arenado’s, saving the Cards from having to pay it down directly.
Parts of this trade make sense, like the 3-way aspect of effecting a trade involving Cubs-Cardinals, offsetting contracts of Walker and Arenado, etc., but Phillies have an outstanding young catching prospect in Eduardo Tait, so I don't agree that they "desperately need" Ballesteros, and if I'm Cubs, he's not available-at least, in this trade.
I understand your point about Tait but he is still 3 years away, best case scenario, and even though he grades well there are questions (as always with young prospects) about him sticking at the position long term. They don’t have much depth beyond Marchan and Stubbs. Ballesteros is the perfect value & position for this trade, but understandably could be untouchable.
