2Outside the box 3-way trade I was thinking of that would benefit all sides: Cardinals- Move off Arenado's remaining salary and eat about $6m for this year while taking on Monty who pitched very well for STL a couple of years back. If he proves valuable they can then flip him at the deadline again if the Cards are out of it in July. Peraza is a buy low lottery ticket to add to the roster and never really got a chance in NY. This move also keeps them at their current payroll around $165m. Diamondbacks- Move off Monty as they have excess starters right now and he was a disaster in AZ. In doing so they essentially trade his contract for Arenado, getting a consistent GG 3B and solid bat to add to the lefty heavy lineup. They would then have to move Suarez to clear his $15m salary and make way for Arenado, while also getting back $6m to pay for his salary, and add quality pitching prospect in Chase Hampton. Ends up putting their luxury tax payroll around $198m. Yankees- Land Suarez, who can be streaky, but would add a lot of thump to their already formidable lineup and add to their already great defensive infield. Helps he is just a 1 year rental as well like their other acquisitions so not a long commitment. Move Hampton as the rotation is fairly set for the future and they are in win now mode, and while they've also been producing quality arms consistently. Puts them around $315-318m payroll before they find a partner to take on Stroman's contract which would be close to netting out Suarez' added salary.
I like it for all 3 teams!
