I don't know that either side does this, but there would be benefits for each club. The Twins would get roughly $4.5 million in salary relief in 2025, a lefty reliever, a 1B, more upside (for one year) at the top spot in the rotation, and a draft pick from the QO they'll offer Cease. The Friars would get more continuity with the rotation (Lopez for 3 years and he's not much of a step down for Cease), a backup catcher, and a flier on some OF help. Maybe San Diego can't afford even the $4.5 million this trade would cost this year even though it fills a hole and doesn't hurt the rotation much. Maybe they don't like Lopez. Maybe the Twins want no part of Cronenworth. More likely, the Twins probably have little interest in trading Lopez. Etc. It's a bit crazy, admittedly.
