For the record, I don’t think this trade has any legs. Reports suggesting the Blue Jays are over $100MM apart in negotiations with Vladdy got me thinking though. Would the Blue Jays trade him, and if they traded him would they want players to help the present or the future? I haven’t liked or understood the moves the Blue Jays have made the past two offseason, so perhaps they do something crazy like swapping Vlad for Diaz to help the present. Diaz has generated 3.1 fWAR annually the past 4 years, while Vlad has generated 4.1 annually, so this trade is a downgrade at 1B; however, Diaz is under control for an extra year and costs only $10MM (compared to Vlad’s $30MM). This trade would allow the Blue jays to continue building around their current players, should they wish to. That makes no sense to me, but as I said, I haven’t liked most of their recent moves. For the Rays, they get a top pitching prospect, a decent defense first SS and a very promising catching prospect. Mets get one of the best 1B in the game. Both the Mets and Rays benefit from the trade. This trade just requires the Blue Jays to continue making bad roster decisions, which I could see them doing.

💰 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Mets, who then sign him to a 12yr deal, sounds about right. 💰

It would be smarter than giving Alonso a 5 year big money deal.
