San Diego gets the DH they need, as well as another recruiter for their surprising run to sign Roki Sasaki. They break even on salary with Musgrove moving to Boston, and they avoid the challenge of bringing back Jay Groome (who would be a PTBNL). Sasaki would take Waldron's spot in the rotation. The Red Sox would get an innings-eating long reliever/fifth starter in Waldron, a year-plus of Musgrove in 2025/26, and a spin of the roulette wheel on Groome, who's well-known in the organization and did better with the Red Sox. Moreover, the Red Sox would open their DH slot to make room for a right-handed power bat.

Two 👎, I think the Padres can’t afford to move the pitching. S.D. needs a DH? Musgrove had TJ on 10/11/24 and Jay Groome is serving a One-year suspension (6/4/24). Plus, players on the 40 man roster can’t be a PTBNL. And, I don’t think any team is trading for Yoshida until they see him return to action from the right shoulder surgery he had in October (hopefully some time in May) but it’s the Padres so….. Happy New Year Robbie Hyde, um…I mean JHB🥂 🎊 🎶

The Internet ate my response. In summary, Groome isn't on the 40-man. A suspended player can be traded, but it just isn't done. Waldron isn't that good a pitcher in San Diego (4.87 ERA last season), but Jason Varitek may be able to work with him after all those years catching with Tim Wakefield on the staff. (I know, I know, Doug Mirabelli...) San Diego has about ten pitching prospects ready for 2025 debuts, including Rule 5 Draft selection Juan Nunez. San Diego's projected DH is 5' 7" 150 lbs. 3B Eguy Rosario, a right-hander whose strength is power hitting who has a .283 MLB OBP but a .500 SLG in three cups of coffee. Statcast and I don't see that SLG lasting. Yeah, San Diego could use a DH.
