6Rule 1 of Rays trade philosophy - Never (almost) pay up for prospects. Rule 2 - Never trade productive major leaguers for prospects straight up or in consolidation trades. Rule 3 - Never trade draft picks. This trade violates all three rules in return for a 1B prospect (the deepest position in the Rays Farm). Never gonna happen.
I'm not sure why the Giants give up their best prospect plus 5 years of control over Miller for 4 combined years of 2 guys (good players, but not not game changers) who will cost $44 million. The picks are probably not going to turn into another Eldridge, and Eldridge is probably going to be the best player in the trade. It makes very little sense for the Giants, particularly if they like Fitzgerald at 2B.
Time for a change in trade philosophy for the Rays, some because of circumstances, but mostly because it hasn’t been working in getting them a Championship. Some tweaking is in order to navigate the next 3+ years and a change and a tweak could get them to the promised land. Hallelujah! Rays fans can see the light! Let’s get that dead weight called Lowe & Diaz off the team and attach comp picks to get it done! In 5yrs from now this is where everyone will point to and look back to where it all started to get better!
LOL. You definitely march to your own beat. Even setting aside the Rules as I called them, what are the Rays going to do with another 1B? Why would they trade 2 high draft picks when they have the best Farm in baseball littered with similarly valued prospects they will never have enough room for on the ML roster, while San Fran arguably does have the room?
Goal #1) Acquire, Acquire, Acquire, and then just let it play out is the name of the game for the next 3+ years. Goal #2) Move EVERYONE with 3 or less years by the deadline.
Moving everyone destroys the culture, and while many may laugh at that statement, it’s part of the reason the low budget Rays go toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in baseball every year and made the playoffs in 5 consecutive seasons before last year.
