18MLBTR says it'll be Springs +1. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/as-close-to-acquiring-jeffrey-springs-from-rays.html
I hate Dave Forst.
Will Simpson is also going to the Rays. Tampa sending a 2nd pitcher.
Do you think trading the pick signals any future moves? I’m surprised they traded it.
I think it means Forst is being reckless with the long-term outlook and health of the team.
I like this for both teams. Athletics get an SP to help carry the load for a couple of years and needed to $pend. The Rays get Boyle, who still has 2 options, so he can help in many ways going forward for the Rays and their future Nomadic life style team pitching staff; back end starter, spot starter, piggy back starter, long man, up and down SP/RP and the Rays can hope on Watters for the same, plus they get the pick. And I almost forgot Will Simpson who could surprise and earn a role.
I ask this question of every pitcher with 5 years of control and around $10MM of trade value - Does Boyle have trade value because he’s a good young pitcher or because he is in the Majors with 5 years of cheap control? If the answer is the cheap control, then I view him as worthless. Rays could trot out any of their existing AAA arms and get similar results to most of the cheap control pitchers with 5 years of control.
Can’t disagree, only that it’s the addition of 2 players
I don't think it's that simple. Boyle has been a cause celebre for a couple years now due to his lively stuff. He's basially Nuke Lalouche, and that stuff and potential drove him up prospect lists, which is still carrying some of the water for his valuation.
Maybe he just needs a Catcher,
Gotta have control/command for that lively stuff to really mean anything. However, we are talking the Rays here so I’m somewhat hopeful this trade will work out, but it seems like a salary dump to me. If Springs rebounds from TJS close to where he was before the injury, he’s a $25MM per year pitcher, with around $40 MM in surplus value. I would have held on to him until the deadline, but of course the Rays (1) know more than I do about his recovery and (2) may have had no choice but to move their highest cost pitcher because of the stadium situation.
Without knowing who else the Rays are sending to Oakland, this trade seems like one the fans of both teams will hate. I won’t speak for Grover and the A’s, but as a Rays fan it seems like we are trading a #3 pitcher (maybe better than 3 if he fully returns to form from TJS) and getting back a draft pick I have zero confidence in the Rays to use properly (e.g., their last two 2nd picks in the draft were no power Emilien Pitre and no bat Adrian Santana, when there were a ton of better options still available), a couple no control pitchers who the Rays might be able to fix with their brand of pixie dust, and another 1B prospect (which the Rays are drowning in). In short, the Rays are getting back no “sure things” to improve their team in return for their #3 pitcher and that ain’t great.
Yea I hate this trade, pretty much more of the usual Rays trying to pull off the smartest kid in the room gimmick, I do like Simpson but he's only at AA, I didn't realize how big of a boy Boyle is so maybe they unlock something there, Watters is just organizational depth, and they'll piss away the draft pick like they always do, they hit on the 1st and bomb on the 2nd, I guess this is their way to pay for 1 season of Jansen, I feel if they just waited til the deadline they would have gotten more for him cause it's hard not to believe it's a salary dump when the return only involves one top 30 prospect.
Well the As are trying to get a few more wins and get their payroll up so no grievances are filed... I am guessing you aren't fond of the trade?
Rays will be watching the Watters Boyle instead of the A’s
They could have traded for Bellinger and Montgomery and given up next to nothing. That would have covered the payroll issue and improved the talent level of the 2025 team while continuing to build for the long run.
They still could trade for both
Not if the payroll cap is $105 MM.
