20trade the jays and guards just made… wtf
We’ll see. Guards gotta be sending lotsa $, though that’s not really what Jays need…?
This trade only makes sense if the Blue Jays are valuing defense more than the league typically does. We have found over the years that offense is weighted more heavily than defense, so while Gimenez's glove is outstanding, his bat is below-average. He fits the profile of a light-hitting 2B, which are in plentiful supply around the league. Also, his contract is heavily backloaded. He'll be making $23M per year in 2027, 2028, and 2029. So if his bat doesn't improve, it's going to hurt.
Toronto OF prospect Nick Mitchell is also heading to Cleveland. 2024 4th round draft pick.
I think this should end the Mark Shapiro & Ross Atkins run in Toronto
Aren't they on the last year of their contracts?
Ownership shouldn’t allow them to make any more moves, I’m thinking they should be out by midnight est.
Well, too late! If you're going to set limits to what they can do roster wise you're probably better off firing them immediately.
The Jays have been one of the only teams in the league who have been prioritizing defense. Trading for Varsho, signing Keiermaier, signing IKF, getting rid of bats like Teoscar and Gurriel. The Guardians clearly took advantage of that bias. And it hasn't worked for Toronto at all.
They value defense and the FO is in a Do-or-Die situation. Gimenez probably "earns" his $10 MM payday and if Atkins and Shapiro are around after the 2025 season they can deal with his contract then. And if they're out... it's someone else's headache.
Gotta wonder if this trade is a prelude to a Bichette trade. I really like Horwitz. Can’t believe Toronto gave him up for a bad contract. Cleveland fans have to be happy.
Shapiro forgot to check BaseballTradeValues.com
I'm starting to think Spencer Horwitz is valued a little too high. Got moved again, not as bad, but still a sizable difference in trade value for Luis Ortiz and Michael Kennedy of the Pirates
Agree. He's a little high -- we see that too -- but not enough to matter that much.
This move by itself, was a question mark from Cleveland's side since they had three people for 2 spots... But I have a hunch Cleveland is making a run way for Brito and Martinez... I feel like this move makes both of them extremely unlikely to be available
Real head scratcher if this is the deal
