I guess I can see the Rays trading a reliever for Hernandez, but it won't be Monty. It will be someone aging out of the Rays system. Someone like Cleavinger (and the Cubs would need to kick in more than Hernandez for Cleavinger). Personally, Hernandez strikes me as a never-gonna-be prospect and I wouldn't be interested in trading for him, but I feel that way about a lot of prospects the Rays trade for and/or draft.

Hernandez may have been overhyped, but he seems to be figuring it out. Good eye at plate. But I’d pass too if I’m the Rays. What would you want for Monty?

Monty looks like a keeper if I’m being totally honest. As a SP his FB was in the low 90s but as a reliever it is up to 99 mph. His future is so much brighter than I would have imagined even 3 months ago. However, Rays have to move 1-2 lefties this offseason, so Monty could be available. If the Rays are willing to trade him, it will require a guy with high upside. Someone like F.Cruz would be the starting point in talks, but I could see the Rays looking for at least twice BTV’s valuation to consider moving Monty.

I agree with all of the above about Monty. Re: F. Cruz. Hard to tell about guys in their teens. Remember last year when everybody was over the moon about Salas of Padres. He's toolsy, so I will probably hang onto him until I figure out what I got. Cubs have several players that are real available that I would be interested in, if I were another club, and I'm not blowing smoke. Not sure if Mervis fits in with Rays, with Isaacs coming up, but the guy has absolutely raked at AAA. Never given a real chance by either Ross or Counsell. Ditto for Canario. I think they would be .240-.260, 20+ homer guys for somebody. Cubs have a glut of SS. Hernandez or Ed Howard (#1 pick) are available. Pedro Ramirez could be a real bargain. Switch hitter with a high average who hardly gets any mention. BTV doesn't even recognize my personal #10 Cubs prospect, Jonathan Long, who absolutely demolished AA pitching last season, and is tearing up the AFL. But he's buried behind Shaw and Smith at 3B. Actually Long for Monty would be a great trade for both teams.

Canario might be of interest but the rest of those guys are low ceiling low floor guys or are bad fits for the Rays. Take Mervis. He's a lefty 1B/DH and the Rays are about 6 deep with top lefty 1B/DH prospects. Long has raked, but he’s also short and a RHB. Maybe he fills a platoon role but he’s not a huge get. Nah, I might roll the dice on swapping Monty for F.Cruz but it should take that kind of upside to interest the Rays to move Monty.
