The Rays already have a half dozen Bret Batys that need to be on the 40 man roster. I have no interest at all in carrying him all year. And I think Springs' team option gives him more value than is being represented here.

Agreed. The only way the Rays consider trading Springs at a near zero valuation is if they have real concerns about his elbow (and I’m saying much more than the normal concerns that come after TJS).

Well, this is where the valuation is off. I know Vargas or Baez or McClean would be more in line what TB would want, but Vargas and Hamel for Springs and Poche isn't an acceptable trade in this system. You can balance it out based on TB tossing in money, but that'll happen never. Best I can guess is that the injury concern with Springs (which is real) has him valued much lower than we think. The above is considered a mild overpay from the Mets side. And I tossed in Hartwig just because. So the real offer I would do would be Vargas or McClean + Hamel for Springs and Poche. TB clears almost 15 mil.

The Rays actually include money in trades relatively often. They're still paying Margot's salary 2 teams later cause they ate all of it. When they acquired Yandy from Cleveland, they sent along $5M with Jake Bauers in the 3 team deal. When they traded Dickerson, they took on an expensive reliever and cut him immediately (essentially sending money). They took on all of Denard Span's salary when they traded Longo. I could see them eating some of Springs' salary for a better prospect, but I can't see the Mets including a better prospect for some cash savings.

Interesting, and shows how little I know about the Rays. Thanks for this. Good post.

Hey, thanks! I know way too much about the Rays, that's for sure. MP up above knows a ton about them too. The first time they ever included money in a trade was when they traded Aubrey Huff. It resulted in them getting a better prospect than they otherwise would have from the Astros. Some dude named Ben Zobrist. The Rays are frugal for sure, but as a fan, I never consider them cheap. If they think they are getting a good deal, they'll spend money. They actually finished 2nd behind the Dodgers in the Freddie Freeman deal, and rumor has it, their offer was bigger but more back loaded. That was after they signed Wander to over $200M. Sadly, I think Wander and the Trop will change their spending habits for a while.
