5I think Grays remaining contract will be tough to move. 2025 age 35 $25,000,000, 2026 age 36 $35,000,000, 2027 age 37 $30M Team Option, $5M Buyout. Gray may opt out of contract if option is exercised. Cardinals send a lot of cash in this deal, maybe it gets it done…..
Unless someone would have been (or would be) willing to sign him to that type of FA contract, the Cards can't afford to move him. Paying someone $35M to NOT pitch for you does not pass the "reset" threshold. Same with Nado's contract, I think.
They'd have to eat it for a year and some of it in 2025, but eventually it would come off their books. Mets had to do something similar with Verlander and Scherzer.
DeWitt is slashing budget, he's not paying $35M for Sonny Gray to play somewhere else.
You can't opt out of a team option. In all likelihood the Cardinals would decline that team option though. Paying off $35 of the remaining $60mil over the course of two seasons can get it done. You just pay off $20mil this year and $15mil next year.
