3Rays lost their broadcast deal this week and are likely in cost-cutting mode. I wouldn't be surprised to see any or all of Y.Diaz, B.Lowe, Z.Littell, P.Fairbanks, C.Poche, T.Alexander, D.Carlson, and G.Cleavinger gone from the roster by OD. Poche, Alexander and Carlson are nontender candidates of course, but the rest should have a market. Fairbanks, when healthy, is an above average high leverage arm. He has been the Rays closer for the past few years and done well. At a cost of only $3.7MM next year, he also fits into any team's budget. From the Dodgers' perspective, their pitching has not been all that good this year, and that is largely tied to injuries. When I look at their roster on MLB.com, I see they have 6 pitchers on the 60 day (not including Hurt who is also on the shelf from TJS). How the Dodgers plan to add all 6 of these guys back to the 40 man at year end is beyond me, while also protecting the next wave of top talent from Rule 5, so this trade is meant to provide some relief to that roster crunch. Dodgers get a high leverage option to their Pen in the form of Fairbanks, at the cost of a top outfield prospect and a AAA pitcher who won't pitch much (or at all) for the ML club next year as he rehabs from TJS. With all the cost cutting moves coming the Rays' way, who were already in the middle of a rebuild anyway, they can afford to stash Hurt on their roster all offseason with no problem.
Trading Hurt & Hope for Fairbanks doesn’t help the 40 man roster crunch.
It does if you view it as trading an unproductive space eater for a cheap productive player. Fairbanks will play next year. Hurt probably won’t (in the Majors at least).
