7Is Ceddanne Rafaela the Rodney Dangerfield of Baseball?
Second straight year of well-below-average offense, is still owed a lot of money. So, nah. The glove is good, but that's not enough.
“ Second straight year”, “ well-below-average offense” and “ owed a lot of money” - he only played 28 games in ‘23 with 89 plate appearances, I don’t see well below average offense, I see a player who plays big and produces in big moments of the game, his versatility on defense and the quality of play is far superior to “ the glove is good”. And the money owed…peanuts compared to these other two and the best bargain in MLB. So, yea, I’m beginning to think the Rodney Dangerfield of Baseball or at least of BTV. I definitely don’t see a player with negative value, and I don’t think other FO around the league do as well.
He has an 80 WRC+ this year over 128 games, which is 20% below league average, and which validates the 74 WRC+ in a smaller sample last year. His Savant page is also all blue (which is bad). It's become clear by all relevant stats that he's a well-below-average offensive player, and overall he's underperforming his contract.
He’s hitting 250 with 15 home runs 20 stolen bases 70 rbi 70 runs scored and is playing gold glove caliber defense at SS CF & 2B for $1.25m and that’s underperforming? In today’s market? Tough crowd…..
Are Julio Rodriguez years and salary listed correctly? Shouldn’t it just be 5yrs & $100m? I see it’s a weird kind of contract.
The most important factor is that the Mariners hold a club option after the 2028 season, which they'd be sure to exercise if current trends hold. That's where the extra years and salary are coming in.
