It’s a pretty good trade from the Royals perspective and I appreciate the effort to line up with the Rays needs. I don’t think the full trade works but maybe a smaller trade would. The Rays are very unlikely to trade Ras. He has 2 years of control left and could be a shut down closer at less than $10MM total for those 2 years. The Rays want to give him a chance to start though, and if he’s able to rejoin the rotation his value to the Rays sky rockets. No one in this trade from the Royals side has that kind of Floor/Ceiling. So take him out. I do think Mead and Fairbanks are available though. As for the return, the Rays Pen has been totally retooled during the season and has the 3rd best ERA in baseball since July 1st. They may be interested in relievers but it’s not a huge need. Catching also isn’t a huge need as far as someone 1-2 years out like Jensen. Rays just called up Driscoll and they are very high on Keegan (their 14th best prospect on MLB). They won’t want Loftin. He can’t play SS at the level needed and the Rays have a logjam at 2B (3B is now Caminero’s for the next half decade). So that leaves Garcia. If the Rays think he can be a defensive stud at SS, then I could see a trade happen. I don’t know that he provide much more value than the Rays’ Caballero, but the Rays have to replace Walls and they don’t really have any internal options until top prospect Carson Williams arrives in 2026.
