Was curious about Brett Baty's player value. He got sent down to AAA on May 31st and his value on June 2nd went UP from 46.2 to 47.3. Since the demotion, he has slashed .259/.355/.523 in 251 PAs in Syracuse (which isn't exactly earth shattering considering the environment but it isn't horrible), and his value has plummeted from that previously mentioned 47.3 all the way to 1.6. He didn't get hurt or anything, why is his value essentially 0 now? I put Detmers in here too because it is a similar kind of player. Detmers got sent down after his June 1st start and has a 6.37 ERA and 1.477 WHIP in 63 IP in Salt Lake since his demotion (again, crazy environment, but still not good). Detmers value was 45.4 at the time of his demotion, and it has fallen a lot but nearly as much as Baty. I feel like these two players have similar value, closer to Detmers' number than Baty's.

Baty's value has decreased because he's had three chances to succeed at the MLB level and failed each time, not coming close to an average hitter, with a 69, 68, and 84 WRC+, and the clock is ticking as he is now old for AAA and is burning through options. We've also found over the years that front office moves are key indicators -- that is, if they leave him in AAA and don't promote him it's a sign of lost confidence. Detmers is not really in a comparable situation, as he had established himself as a solid starter for two consecutive years before struggling a bit this year, so he's earned a bit more runway.

Very much appreciate the response. It's no secret that the Mets became one of the best offenses in the sport as soon as Baty got sent down. I like to think the team would call Baty up if there was a place to play him, but I would not take him over any of the other 13 position players on the 26-man roster currently. I suppose that's your point. I didn't consider the age factor, still thought he was young enough to be considered somewhat of a prospect, considering a guy like Heston Kjerstad is still a highly sought after prospect and is a year older than Baty (I understand why Kjerstad still has tremendous value, different circumstances). I just figure if a team were to trade for Baty in the offseason, it would be for a package closer to Detmers' value than Baty's.
