22Real trade. Cash isn't there, it's just for Ty Johnson.
What an awful, horrendous, WTF are the Rays thinking trade!!!! They are basically trading Paredes for Morel straight up, or put another way, they are trading an all star 3B with 3 years of control for a defensively challenged guy with a replacement level bat who has 1 extra year of control. But hey, at least Morel has good exit velocities and hard hit rates. All the good vibes from this morning's trade of Adam in a huge overpay are gone. This trade effectively ends the Rays' season and doesn't improve them for the future. What are the Rays thinking???
Doesn't end the season though. Caminero swaps in for Paredes. Morel replaces Randy('s bat). Springs replaces Eflin. Rasmussen replaces Adam. They were at 20% to make the postseason before the trade, and they're probably still around there. Now if they sell Fairbanks, BLowe and Yandy, it will devastate their chances of keeping my interest til the post season.
Love the trade for the Cubbies! Of course, Paredes for Morel (+prospects) has been speculated for nearly the last year on this website by Cubs fans only to be accosted by mp. Lots of receipts in his comments history.
Yep. I stand by all those posts too. This is an awful trade for the Rays. I understand why Cubs fans are thrilled with this trade. You guys just swapped a bad player you've been trying to unload for 2 years for an all-star 3B.
I actually agree with you, and was/are a big fan of Morel. But that was 400 PA ago, when I thought a breakout was coming. I wanted to buy the guy based on a progression I expected to happen, not after the regression, but still pay progression level rates for him. I like the Rays targeting him, but not at this cost. I do think we'll see Ty Johnson come from nowhere to be the Rays next success story. Overall, I dislike this trade, but I'm sure I don't dislike it as much as you. Paredes was your guy. You were on him before anyone else I remember, and stuck with him when he had months of nothing in 2022, and then had a big emergence last year. I bet you're pretty livid.
I actually feel a little sick from this trade, that's how much I hate it. It's not just that I liked Paredes, but that I really don't like Morel. I'm sure Morel is a fine person, so don't misunderstand me here. The Rays are selling low on Paredes, and paying up for Morel (based on actual production he isn't even worth $22.7MM (and for a guy with 3 years in the Majors and over 400 PAs each year, I care more about actual production than potential). I'm guessing the Rays think Paredes is about to regress... HARD, and Morel's potential can be realized. Even if that happens though, this trade sucks. Paredes should have fetched a lot more.
The Rays are dominating the deadline; Out so far are; Civale, Eflin, Arozarena, Adam, Paredes. And I think they’ve gotten back 10 prospects and 1 major leaguer.
Data on Paredes is very bad. Rays know this, most everyone else does as well.
Data on Jeter was worse.
What trade was that?
Alex Rodriguez trade. ARod got forced off his position for a bad shortstop who was liked by the ownership.
And that was already baked into his valuation.
John - This trade should be the featured one, as it has the discussion.
Done. Good point.
Paredes' exit velocities and hard hit rates have never looked good. That hasn't stopped him from producing at a 4 WAR rate for 3 years running. You may not like the underlying stats, but underlying stats don't win games.
The interesting thing to me are the other trades that led to this one. Candelario and Parades for Avila and Justin Wilson in 2017, who were okay at best. Last year, the Cubs gave away their ex-minor league pitcher of the year, DJ Herz, and Kevin Made to get Candelario back, only to let him go again. Now they are trading away Morel, who as MP points out, does hit the ball hard, and a couple hard throwers to get Parades back into the fold. Well, you can't hang onto everybody. I think Jed did okay on this one.
TB for a team that is famous for its trade dealings sure has gotten taken this season
Actually, before the Paredes trade I was pretty happy with the trades overall. But the Paredes trade leaves a rather sour taste in my mouth, even if the pitchers are more than just throw ins (some Rays fans are trying to convince me that Bigge is the real prize of this trade, a surefire closer next year).
There's no way the Rays traded 4 years of Paredes for 6 years of a reliever.
30% K rate with an 8% BB rate out of Johnson is really nice, but this seems light. Morel hits the ball really hard, so I guess they're buying low and selling high, but Paredes has too much control left to force a trade like this.
Rays aren't buying low and selling high when they're selling for 50 cents on the dollar.
