5Rays don't trade with the Yankees. Sometimes they do 3 team trades where the Yankees send them someone and they send their player to the 3rd team, but a direct 2 team trade between the Rays and Yankees is hard to see happening. If it did, it would need to be a need trade for one of the teams. I think the Yankees' need to improve 1B might qualify. They get 2.5 years of Yandy Diaz, who after a slow start has heated up and has hit .286/.339/.420 since May 1st. That's still shy of what he's capable, but it also represents a vast improvement on what the Yankees have gotten from 1B this year. In return, the Rays get promising outfield prospect B.Mayea. High risk, high reward, all or none trade for the Rays. Not their usual style, but I think that's probably the only way they're doing a trade with the Yankees (ie: falling in love with one of the Yankees' prospects).
Nice! 👍 although the Yankees seem pleased with Ben Rice at 1B so far
They should be very pleased with Rice, but Rice has more games in the Majors than he was given in AAA. Give teams time to truly scout him, particularly in the playoffs, and he may struggle a lot. Yandy is a proven commodity and last year's batting champ. If they can add Diaz for the cost of a far off player, even one as toolsy as Mayea, I would think they would jump at the chance.
Did you see/read this on Diaz; https://blogs.fangraphs.com/tracking-yandy-diazs-bat/
Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of all that, but it was an interesting read.
