It’s a pretty clear indication of how this spring has gone for Cincinnati that they went from having an infield logjam to becoming short-handed in the span of a few weeks. McLain, who was set to be the primary second baseman this season, is getting a second opinion and possibly facing surgery. Should that happen, India could become the Reds' everyday second baseman, the same role he filled in 2023. Espinal provides the Reds with a versatile bench option capable of filling in at multiple spots with Noelvi Marte (suspension) and Matt McLain (shoulder) sidelined to open the year. The big question is how long McLain will be sidelined at this juncture, but Espinal at least provides bench depth.
