12Brewers want nothing to do with Elder until the Braves can figure out what happened to him last year.
I want to say this is by far one of the most creative trades I’ve seen on this site (Braves fan, also have a soft spot in my <3 for the Brew Crew). This is probably accepted by AA, but I would rather have Wiemer + Crow (or upside reliever with options) > Adames and perhaps taking away the Comp B pick to make it a more fair trade. Also, I just don’t think the Brewers part with both of their Comp Picks.
What's creative about it for you? I too don't think the Brewers would trade away those two draft picks. What Brewers player(s) would you otherwise pair with Adames to get back Elder? Trading Adames now signals to me that Milwaukee's settling for mediocrity in 2024. Why do you think Alex Anthopoulos would accept this trade? He gave Arcia a 3 year deal last year and traded away both Grissom and Shewmake. So now Arcia's on the bench?
I think it’s creative in the sense that Elder would be the trade target, compared to a B. Miller, Woo, Cabrera (who are probably more likely to be on the trade block compared to Elder). I also think some of the pieces are interesting. I really like Pratt and I love the Comp A pick. Atlanta does have a need for MIF prospects with upside and this 2024 draft has plenty of college pitching talent available and that seems to be AAs favorite demographic. Like I posted earlier, I think AA would accept and it’s a tempting offer to upgrade at SS, but personally I don’t think Adames is a big enough upgrade and I am more interested in a different headlining piece.
Arcia is paid like a depth piece, don't let the 3-year part fool you. He has tons of value because of that, I would never say he's the "solution" at SS for the Braves. He doesn't hurt them because of the depth of their lineup, but Adames would most certainly be an upgrade for this year.
agreed, ItchyBob
I see this as being a very easy "PASS" by the Brewers. Elder is fighting to make the Braves rotation and possibly the team. He regressed badly after his first 10 starts last year. He was awful in the playoffs when the Braves gave him a start. All indications are that his early starts of 2023 were an anomaly and he is little more than a #5/swing man pitcher. Milwaukee has enough of those types and don't want to give up much of anything for him.
Elder faded after he surpassed his career best in innings last year. Similar to many who move quickly through the minors with little full season time spent. Elder is unlikely to ever be an ace, but has a reasonable shot to be a solid three, which is arguably less than he was before hitting a wall last year. He has value. I'm just not sold that he has a place with the Braves due to where the Braves are right now in their contention window.
I think Elder’s ceiling is also a No. 3, I would argue he’s at least equal to Miller, Woo, Cabrera, and Crawford. I have to disagree that he doesn’t have a place on the Braves because he would’ve been moved if he didn’t bring anything to the team. People forget he made 30 starts and put up solid numbers for a rookie. He’s durable, and he’ll always outperform his underlyings as a contact pitcher (like Marcus Stroman). Personally, I wouldn’t want to move Elder given how cursed Atlanta is with health. I don’t expect, nor should any team to swap their top prospect for Elder 1F1, but it needs to be a quantity package (slightly lesser than the Polanco to SEA trade) that addresses ATL’s farm needs.
I like a lot of what y'all are saying. It's good for a top team like Atlanta if Elder's in Gwinnett and able to spot start. Stroman's a savvy comp. Maybe that team can get a back a middle infielder or a catcher in a trade.
You are a broken record. We get it. In YOUR opinion, you think Elder is broken and wouldn't take him for a bag of used minor league baseballs.
I've also seen jmont1 replying with this same thing. Not much more behind it. I'm not commenting to be confrontational but just to share that it's not an interesting comment in the first place, never mind on repeat. I think Elder's just ok and that the 5th spot for the Braves is going to be Lopez's to lose. No trade for me though. I'm hoping Orlando Arcia, along with Kelenic, are able to hit without being overly pressured. I'm already thinking about a 2025 rotation potentially with Strider, Sale, Elder, AJ Smith-Shawver, Reynaldo Lopez, Ian Anderson and Huascar Ynoa. They've all had some measurable level of success in the Majors before.
