9For my fellow Guardian fans let me explain what I've done. Prior to this deal I sent Kwan and Freeman to Seattle for Miller and Ford. I also sent McKenzie to Pittsburgh for Henry Davis. Both Ford and Davis can C and play corner OF. They provide excellent RH power as well. Ford probably won't be ready until late 2024 or 2025 so there is no rush for him and he can get promoted with DeLauter. Davis becomes our RFer immediately and a huge upgrade. McKenzie is replaced with Sheehan, Miller and Hurt which creates excellent depth and makes it easier to deal Bieber. A rotation of Bibee, Miller, Williams, Sheehan and Hurt or Allen is formidable. If Espino can get healthy and Cantillo finish his development then they would have enviable SP talent and depth. There is likely a bump or two in the road for a couple of these young SP, but not likely anything that will keep them from realizing their talent.
I was going to ask if the 3 trades were interrelated…I love everything you are doing here. My only issue is the health status of McKenzie. That trade might have to be put on hold until he proves he’s ok (a physical will show that I suppose, but if I were Pitt I would want to see it on the field). Hope you get positive responses from both sides, each of these trades are win-win.
keen insight.. when I saw the trio of deals.. the first thoughts were.. "..if only all three could happen at the same time.." Then, looking at a deal as a deal should be.. Can the deal stand on its own and would the Guardians "still" be willing to make the deal even if one or two of the others were NOT made.. Overall Net for the Guardians: Guardians send away: Emmanuel Clase [closer], Triston McKenzie [SP2], Steven Kwan [LF] and Tyler Freeman [2B/SS/3B/OF=UTIL] Guardians receive: Bryce Miller [SP2],Emmett Sheehan [SP4], Kyle Hurt [SP4/RP], Henry Davis [RF/C], Harry Ford [C] A few notes.. ====The 40 man roster status with all three trades does not change. No DFA required. ==== The Guardians payroll will see a small amount of $$ reduced. Evaluating each trade: I would love to see a little more from the Dodgers in that deal.. Maybe add Liranzo C or Doncon (Inf).. It's not a deal breaker, but the Guardians/Dodgers deal would only be made if the other two deals are already in the bag. Pirates/Guardians: Spring Training should be more than the Guardians should EVER allow for a deal with them. As stated.. From the Pirates perspective, they should ask for and receive a little extra.. like a Tanner Burns or a James Karinchak.. no more than that.. and ABSOLUTELY no Comp A pick.. Seattle/Guardians: This is the deal that hurts the most and most likely to be declined.. unless a significant addition is included.. a player like Brayan Rocchio and a Comp A pick instead of just Tyler Freeman.. imho.. Even with the addition to the Seattle portion of the deal.. this is still worth consideration.. And even though Ford doesn't currently play the OF.. based on what you can see (if you look), there is no reason he cannot be a solid to spectacular OF'er.. Thoughts?
Big Bat, where are you getting the idea that Ford can play the outfield? He has not played even one inning in the outfield in his career in the minors. If fact, he has been quoted as saying "I played in the outfield as a kid and just got really bored. I have ADHD, so I don't really focus very well. But I got to catch one time and I just love getting the ball every time and being in the game the entire game. Is investing in two number one catchers the wisest thing when the outfield needs help even with DeLauter coming?
I'm ok with Davis being more of an OFer than a C TA if that helps. I'm focused on the 2 RHH additions that would/could really spark this offense.
I have no problem having Sheehan and Miller replace Bieber and McKenzie as both young pitchers seem to be legit pitchers and both will pitch in the majors in 2024.
Thanks for all the positive feedback and logical questions. Mrvics the deal with Pittsburgh would absolutely depend on Triston being healthy and passing a thorough exam. Gson I have no qualms whatsoever with your rebuttals. I left the deal with the Dodgers a little short for Cleveland in an attempt to "sell it". I think the return of Sheehan and Hurt would be very beneficial to Cleveland, but if they can get a little more then by all means.... TA, bringing to light the fact that Ford has not played OF perfectly logical. I based his ability to play in the grass merely on his fantastic athletic ability, speed and strong arm. For me anyway, he is very much of the same mold as Davis. If it so happens that he forces himself into more time as C then that wouldn't be a bad thing. Ultimately, I viewed it as all of Naylor, Davis and Ford being extremely good athletes for catchers and that they could each help the other stay healthy by sharing the C duties of a 162 game season. If it ended up that 2 of them carried most of the C burden and the other played more OF then so be it. I wouldn't even care which 2 because all 3 would help this offense/lineup significantly IMO. An OF that had Davis, DeLauter and possibly Florial(should he breakthrough) would be pretty damn good. Throw Miller into a rotation that already has Bibee/Williams/Sheehan/Allen and we're looking at a rotation that nobody wants to face in the playoffs.
As a Dodgers fan it would hurt quite a bit to lose both Sheehan and Hurt – two guys I'm extremely high on – but I think this is a reasonable exchange.
That's understandable Dan and I'd be willing to listen to offers. The staple of the deal for me is Sheehan. From there we can discuss what might work better for the Dodgers. I haven't dealt Bieber yet. If you'd like to have Clase and Bieber for a package headed up by Sheehan then we could certainly discuss it.
