6As we near Spring Training fans are starting to freak out a bit that their team still has glaring issues. It appears San Diego is trying to contend this year, I would think realistically for a Wild Card. This trade will fill in major issues. Bieber gives them a mid rotation arm (and any health doubts will be alleviated with his physical). Naylor provides instant offense, plays a really good first, and of course can DH. Getting established MLB players doesn’t come cheaply, and the price is high, but prospects are just that. The risk here is on Cleveland, that Thorpe and Marsee can provide value in the future. Likely both players won’t be ready until 2025, which more suits Cleveland’s contention window.
Down Vote for me.
I'm not agreeing to move Naylor without replacing him with a bat that is at least as productive, and good luck with that.
Cleveland isn't moving Bieber, in my mind unless they get a MLB bat plus another mid-tier or higher prospect. They spent nearly 9 million extra to pick up Barlow and Hedges. Naylor is one of their main players and one of their main leaders in the clubhouse... The FO went and signed Hedges to help unite the clubhouse that feel apart last season. They can't afford to trade Naylor right now... If anything the Owner needs to pay Naylor who likely will take a fair market value deal instead of free agency. Now when it comes to talent, Cleveland would love Thorpe but Marsee doesn't make a ton of sense... I would learn more towards Homer Bush Jr since he could be a Straw+ replacement and be a righty in that very heavy left handed hitting OF since the OF in the minors is extremely skewed towards left handed hitters
Your point about Bieber is likely the reason he’s still on the team. I do think he will bounce back this year, but they do need to get something for him. If he’s worth more at the break that’s fine too. I was mystified about the Hedges signing. Just make him a coach then. I was thrilled when he left and now he’s back. A team that lacks this much offense just can’t afford too many unproductive ABs. The Barlow trade…DLS had a better ‘23 and was cheaper. If Barlow was going to close, with Clase being traded, then fine. Seems like a lot of $ for a rental. I love Marsee, and reading up on the Padres their fans do too. He’s been running .400+ OBP, a bit of power, steals bases. An obvious fit in center by 2025. I do like Bush Jr., but not as clear a track record. Naylor…I know what he means to the team, but honestly I don’t see him being extended. Why then get Manzardo if you’re keeping Naylor? Might as well trade from a position of strength. Thanks for the comment.
Problem with Marsee if the fact we have brought in a million LH hitting OFs and the only ones that don't seem long term is the RH OFs... So if Marsee and Bush Jr ranked the same, I feel like they would just go Bush since you do seem right handed hitters... Hedges and Barlow moves personally told me, that Cleveland wants to win the division so they needed to add their team captain back (Aka Hedges) plus have him around to help groom Bo... Hence why I think Fry makes the roster... I see Bo or Fry pinch hitting for Hedges when he starts or Hedges coming in as a defensive replacement. So this makes DDLS not on this team personally... I really personally believe they will find a way to extend Naylor then have Manazardo playing with him between 1B/DH... I actually think we will be fine with both long term. I feel like Manzardo was brought in to help Naylor in the lineup...
