11Cleveland is desperate for outfielders and the only scenario I would move Kwan is to get back a quality starting pitcher. I believe Rocchio should start on day 1 at SS, but word is the first look is Arias, which I don’t understand. Might as well move him for something of need. Miami has holes at both positions and will fill those ably for years to come in both players. On the Cleveland side, it’s clear the team is not doing anything to beef up its offense, so if you can’t score runs then prevent them. Garrett adds to a strong 3 already in the rotation. McKenzie is a question mark, Bieber likely traded and a #5 can be had internally or via trade. Alderman is added to even things out as a potential lottery ticket. Hopefully a trade that satisfies both team’s needs.
I also believe that Rocchio should start at short. I understand the idea of adding a pitcher, but trading Kwan leaves the worst outfield likely in MLB history to start 2024 and that I just don't want to see that. Brennan, Straw, Laureano, Florial, and Rodriquez. Ouch
I agree there is risk here. If this trade happens I would then look to shore up the outfield via trade. I want to move Clase and Bieber. I love Naylor, but don’t see the sense in having 2 first baseman (and I like the idea of a revolving DH and not a full time one), so he can bring in talent. I am not giving up on Brennan. Sometimes rookies stumble, so see if he rebounds. Florial is intriguing. I’ve always thought a Valera/Rodriguez platoon in RF would be interesting. I have no need for Laureano or Straw. I think the outfield can be rebuilt. A rotation of Bibee, Williams, Garrett, Allen, with potentially McKenzie or Cantillo, or someone acquired via trade is very strong. Those TOR guys are hard to come by but definitely don’t come cheaply. Thanks for the comment.
I want to move Clase, Bieber, McKenzie, Kwan, Rocchio and Freeman. That's a lot of talent that should garner what this team needs to become a perennial WS contender. As it stands now they aren't favored to win the AL Central. They just don't have the thump.
As a Marlins fan I like this, the thought of Kwan and Arraez back to back would be special. If need be Marlins can trade some RP for a third team to get Cleveland OF
We agree on that. I wanted Arraez last off season but knew trading with the Twins would be likely impossible. Having Kwan and Arraez at the top of the order would be special. I have a bias for contact (love HRs don’t get me wrong) but having 2 table setters like that would be fun to watch!
Kwan and Arraez at the top of the order would be non-productive.
I'd rather pursue Miller and/or Sheehan than pay that cost for Garrett. I'm not saying he isn't worth it because he is. I just think that Miller and Sheehan are better, less expensive investments with just as much talent. You can believe Rocchio should be the SS all you want, but he simply doesn't have the talent that Arias does. That's blatantly obvious, but there is some kind of mythological expectations for Rocchio and he hasn't faired as well as Arias in his initial exposure. Offensively or defensively. I agree 100% that McKenzie is an uncertainty regardless of his current health status. If I could get my hands on Miller and Sheehan(I believe the Guardians could if they really wanted to) then I'd deal both Bieber and McKenzie. I like the addition of Alderman, but he's a year or two away.
I’m not sure the Rocchio vs. Arias evaluation is obvious at all. Arias has no control of the strike zone, and his MLB sample size is 400 PA, a small sample, but I don’t see him changing his approach. Yes, you will get more HRs, but his overall game is worse than Rocchio. And Rocchio’s initial exposure of 86 PA is hardly something to judge a player. My guess is Arias will fizzle if given the starting job, whereas I can see Rocchio as a solid everyday player. Even this site has Rocchio’s AFV at 32.6 vs. Arias at 17.1, so I’m not the only one thinking this.
Then you don't see Rocchio changing his approach either because they are both very close in age. Rocchio hasn't missed as much time as Arias 2 seasons ago when he broke his hammate bone then pulled his hamstring. My guess is that Rocchio will be dealt or you will watch his value die on the vine. He's not the player Arias is and that's exactly why Arias is your starting SS. The value Rocchio has here is as a prospect. If Arias falters and needs replaced it will be Gimenez taking over SS and Brito at 2B. Brito actually has some thump in his bat.
That last part you mentioned I was actually thinking as well. It’s all a moot point because of what you said; Brito will be the future 2B anyway. Agree to disagree on Rocchio v. Arias. They’ll both likely end up playing elsewhere anyway.
