Naylor is an extremely valuable player to the Guardians, but with Manzardo coming up soon I think his value should be used to add 2 young, talented players. In this trade is a swap of negative values. Suarez, at $36M, is owed more than Straw, at $18.7M, but adding in Naylor’s future estimated salary of $18M, creates an overall wash of money. 2024 is a payroll issue for SD (and likely for Cleveland as well). For 2024 only, this trade would add $1.9M to the Guardians payroll (Naylor+Straw-Suarez). Fans don’t care about this, but it’s important for a realistic trade. Both Straw and Suarez, although not exciting, can provide depth in areas of need for their new teams. Naylor is a player that fits perfectly into the Padres roster, a huge upgrade at 1B/DH, it just depends on if they plan to compete in 2024. If not, then obviously an unrealistic trade. Cleveland gets 2 very good minor league prospects, in Marsee and Thorpe, ready possibly by 2025 to more fit Cleveland’s competitive window.
