The Padres are looking for immediate help in their starting pitching, the back end of the bullpen, and center field. This trade satisfies all of those needs, although Straw is nothing to write home about. Padre fans aren’t going to be texting their friends “Dude, we just got Myles Straw!!”, no, but to move Clase and Bieber in the same deal Straw would have to be included. If SD wants to compete in 2024 this is a good trade, if they want to kick the can down the road, then it’s not. In return Cleveland gets 2 upside starters that will help in 2025+ (where I see their contention window beginning). Cleveland also receives a LH bullpen option in Cosgrove, and Marsee, a good young outfielder with an ETA of 2025.

Cleveland's needs to add offense to their roster for 2024 so you add two pitchers to the minors and only a reliever for the MLB roster. I am so glad that you care so much about the Padres.

You see what top flight starting pitchers are going for, right? How can Cleveland get this talent? Free agency is not an option. The draft has been good lately, but risky. So that leaves mostly trades. Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw, etc., were all minor leaguers once too. With this trade you are bringing in potentially 2 TOR arms. Why is that misguided? Bieber has one year left, and at his low value you may not get much for him anyway. And Clase? Take advantage of teams that MUST have a closer. The over evaluation is ridiculous. You apparently didn’t follow last year and saw how mediocre Clase was. Closers are just too inconsistent. And this trade gets rid of Straw! That’s got to count for something.
