8Miami needs a new SS and there are not great options in free agency. Rocchio gives them an immediate upgrade. He is the #1 ranked Guardians prospect, but Cleveland has a glut of middle infielders and needs back of the rotation help (especially if trading Bieber). Cabrera has had control issues, but has a live arm who could flourish in a pitching oriented organization. Scott is a local Ohio guy,but is a free agent in 2025. If I were the FO I would try to lock him in for a couple of more years following this trade.
Marlins would not be interested for couple reasons. The first being they cannot trade this much pitching away, and certainly not for less value as a return. The second reason is the return is a minor league player who may/may not be MLB ready. That uncertainty does not warrant two MLB pitchers in trade. Scott is good MLB reliever. Cabrera carries good arm, has control issues but has established MLB credentials, and floor, so to speak. Rocchio carries promise as prospect but no established MLB level of performance. He could not beat out Arias last season which makes his 'upgrade' status questionable. Miami has inexperienced SS available now.
"He could not beat out Arias last season which makes his 'upgrade' status questionable" should be ignored by everyone because that is not why Rocchio was not the starting SS. We could get a better SP from the Dodgers for Rocchio who is already a GG caliber defensive SS that can hit well from both sides of the plate. If the Marlins decline this deal then they will not get a better ML ready SS in a trade.
I would encourage Cleveland to get the better SP from LA. aside question: do you expect Rocchio to be starting SS in Cleveland 2024 ?
Rocchio would be my first choice at SS, but I suspect Arias will be given the job, which I really don’t understand. I see Juan Brito (a better offensive player), who can only play second, as the 2B in 2025, with Gimenez moving to his natural SS position. I love Rocchio, and he will be very good, but Cleveland has other options. If I can use him to bolster the SP then that’s the way it goes. I have proposed trading him to the Dodgers for SP as well. Miami would not be disappointed if they acquired him. No BS, he will be good.
I agree with your initial statement, that the likeliest reason Miami wouldn’t do this is because of trading away too much pitching. Although it’s no guarantee Rocchio will be an all-star, the value of getting an established, good “MLB ready” SS is probably beyond Miami’s budget. This is the cost of getting someone (Rocchio) that has been evaluated as potentially being a very good MLB player. Risk is something every team needs to deal with. Cleveland’s risk is Cabrera stays healthy and doesn’t walk 6 per 9 innings, and that Scott would only be a one year rental. Thanks for your comment. I do appreciate the feedback and discussion.
Solid trade for both teams.. The $ 6 MM projected salary for Tanner Scott could become a sticking point with the fiscally uncertain (see "fiscal uncertainty" in a google search) Guardians.. but the deal makes a LOT of sense both ways. All three players are immediate "plug and play".. A young / controllable SP with a live arm coupled with an experienced back of the pen arm is perhaps the best asset the Guardians could hope for in return for an advanced SS prospect like Rocchio.. Thanks for posting..
And thank you for your comment. It’s always nice to get feedback.
