This follows reports earlier this morning that the Reds are discussing a Bieber trade with Cleveland: The Guardians ship out their ace and get back a power-hitting right-handed outfield bat, the number 1 item on their wishlist their offseason. Is Rooker the best answer to this problem? Probably not. Is he a solid addition? Depends on who you ask. Last year could've been a fluke given his prior major league success, or he could build on his All-Star season. Getting just 1 player back for Bieber seems unlikely to me, and getting only 1 back for him And another player seems even more unlikely, albeit that player is a bench guy without a role. The Reds get not 1 but 2 quality starters to add to their rotation in Bieber and Sears. Moving CES could be a difficult decision for Cincy, but I believe with their surplus of infielders (Steer, McLain, Marte, De La Cruz, India, CES), they'd be willing to move at least 1 of those. The Athletics get a guy in Freeman who could step in and be their shortstop for the season and maybe beyond. CES provides them a franchise player at the corner with the A's currently projected to start one of Miguel Andujar, Abraham Toro, or Aledmys Diaz with no clear potential future stalwart. Moving Rooker and Sears and capitalizing on their value is a no-brainer for a team that won't contend for at least another year, probably more. Thoughts?

Down vote for Oakland. The A's are going to have Nick Allen and Darell Hernaiz fight it out for SS in 2024. They used the #6 pick to draft Jacob Miller, a SS prospect that's expected to start next year in AA. They don't have a near or long term need for Freeman. CES isn't going to stick at 3B. He'd basically replace Rooker at DH.

Cleveland wouldn't do this either... Rooker won't be a target at that price...

And that's why this site frustrates me sometimes because a year ago, Rooker was basically a nobody. Was '23 a flash in the pan or will it carry over? Personally, I feel like this site is overvaluing Rooker.

I'm not an A's fan, but hasn't Allen gotten the last year or so to be the SS? That was my understanding when making this, that Allen hasn't shown enough to be the guy, but again I don't really know. I understand giving Hernaiz a chance though. So if Freeman isn't the answer at shortstop, why not try and let him be the answer at 3B? He plays all over the infield, so that could work too? While it's probable CES won't be staying at 3B, with a move to 1B or DH likely, I still feel like he would be a great piece for a team like the A's trying to stockpile young talent. But that's just me personally. I appreciate the insight!

Freeman wouldn't work at 3B because Oakland very much has a type at the hot corner: Plus defense with a Power over Hit bat. That's not Tyler Freeman. As for CES... he's not a great piece if they're giving up Sears to swap DHs.

I have no interest in Rooker as a Guardian fan. He has had two good months in his entire career.

You would be ok with Cleveland giving up Bieber and Freeman for Rooker? I gave it a downvote because I couldn't give it two. There's a lot better value to be had by dealing Bieber and Freeman than a 29 yr old flash in the pan. I'm not sure this is enough value for Sears.

See, that's the problem because I feel like this site is undervaluing Bieber a lot and probably overvaluing Rooker, so posting this trade felt wrong because I don't necessarily think it's realistic for a Bieber trade to happen where he isn't the biggest piece involved and the Guardians have to give up multiple guys to get 1 guy. And that's what caused my hangup in making this trade because I don't really think that would make a lot of sense for us, but the site says Rooker > Bieber

BigBat

Yeah it makes it tough for sure, but you can always add cash to help out even you don't intend for any cash to actually be in the deal. I'm not confident Cleveland would even pursue Rooker if he were released.
