3The Dodgers are at the upper salary limit. If Martinez at $10 and Pepiot at $0.5 and the Pirates eat $5 of Reynolds $6.5 is owed, the Dodgers will net a reduction of $9MM and get the outfielder they need. The Pirates can rid themselves of either Martinez or Santana and net four good pitching prospects that they want and need. Works for me.
The Pirates do not pay their players enough let alone chip in cash.
Not true. They have been spending some this year. Also, they can probably trade either JD or Santana for a prospect or a player to be gotten later. They would only be picking up $9 ($10.5 less $1.5) which they can afford.
