8Alright 3rd try now... Dodgers get Reynolds while also somehow staying under/somewhere near the luxury tax. Reynolds replaces Bellinger in CF and he is actually way cheaper than him as well (6.75 million this season). They also get a high leverage back of the pen guy in James Karinchak, who can replace Daniel Hudson and Craig Kimbrel for a whole lot cheaper. Chase DeLauter helps replenish the farm a little bit, as they are losing quite a few top guys in this trade. 4 million cash from the pirates helps with getting below the luxury tax, which seems to be their goal this offseason. Guardians upgrade their offense with Miguel Vargas who is able to play 1B, 3B, OF and even some 2B. He gives their lineup a big boost that it lacked in 2021. Getting rid of straw will also help that offense, as he was atrocious at the plate. They also get SS prospect Rayne Doncon, as well as RHP prospect Landon Knack. Guardians have options in CF (maybe call up Rocchio and move Rosario to CF)? They get this deal done without giving up any of their top 4 pitching prospects (Espino, Williams, Bibee and Allen). Pirates receive two top 100 pitching prospects in Ryan Pepiot and Gavin Stone. Both are MLB ready and should be big contributors to them this coming season. They also receive speedy OFer Myles Straw, who can be the stopgap until Andy Pages is ready to take over in CF for them. (Likely in 2024 sometime). Finally Daniel Hudson gives them a veteran presence on a very young team. Thoughts?
I just don't see why the Guardians have to be in here, especially having them give up DeLauter. Lot's of people think DeLauter's gonna be special, and I don't know if they'd be willing to give him up. I also don't see the need for Vargas here, especially at the cost of Karinchak. And even though I am totally for trading Straw, they'd have to have a clear impact replacement for him. His defense is super valuable, and it wouldn't make sense to trade him and put Rosario in the outfield. If they acquired another CFer in a deal, that'd make more sense. I think it works out between the Dodgers and the Pirates though. Interesting one here...
Also, Cleveland won't deal DeLauter at this value or probably at all. He was the best hitter drafted last year so they'll sit on him. Funny how Cross and Green have that much more excess value than DeLauter when DeLauter is a better player across the board. He's a true 5 tool possibility. I think they'd look to deal Valera before they would DeLauter simply because DeLauter is a better athlete and a better OFer who can play CF. With DeLauter's ridiculous plate discipline, power and contact ability, watch him rocket through Cleveland's system. If he flops then they're not out much if his value is only 8.7(it's not). Rocchio isn't blocked by anyone unless Arias takes off. When Rocchio is ready he'll supplant Rosario if he's still around. Kwan isn't shifting to CF. He's simply not nearly as good defensively in CF.
Shoot, if you turn down a deal that Cleveland trades Straw in, you know it's a bad deal for Cleveland...
Absolutely! In fact, they can just have Straw and his contract. I don't need anything in return other than the satisfaction that he is gone and we have someone in CF that can actually hit a baseball.
Mostly because I think the Dodgers need more pitching and I think Karinchak would be a great add. Maybe the Guards could shift Kwan to CF? Plus they need a position for Rocchio once he comes up. Currently he is blocked by Rosario and Gimenez.
I'll be honest, I want Vargas in Cleveland and I could see Cleveland maybe offering Valera/Rocchio plus an SP prospect (Curry wth Valera, Allen with Rocchio) type of deal on paper, since I believe Vargas will be the best hitter of the three prospects. This is just to big and too complicated to pull off in real life. How many three way trades have ever been this big? When it comes to Karinchak, I doubt Cleveland would make him available. I don't even know if they would straight up swap him for Vargas, that's how high they are on him. If he could have been had for 16, trust me, most teams would have given up that much talent for him. I actually am thinking Cleveland wants to add to add another arm to the bullpen not subtract. DeLauter, I doubt is remotely available, especially if Doncon is a returning player. He actually wasn't even Cleveland's first choice in last year's draft, but the class, on paper, may have a bunch of everyday/All-Star hitters come from those early position players. Cleveland isn't going to let go of DeLauter or Campbell anytime soon... Ps. Pages to me isn't a top 100 prospect... I'd so rather have Outman than Pages...
Cleveland isn't doing this. Vargas is a nice prospect and all, but Cleveland isn't going to be used to upgrade the other 2 teams in a 3-way deal and while not getting better themselves. In fact, there is a legitimate concern that the loss of Karinchak and not gaining any experienced, proven major league players lessens the quality of the ML team.
